Credit Hours and Class Times

The Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs define a credit hour and specify how it is measured, including using contact minutes. Academic departments are responsible for ensuring that their course offerings align with the institution’s credit hour definition. As subject matter experts, departments are best positioned to determine the appropriate pedagogy for their disciplines.

The Office of the University Registrar oversees the campus-hosted classroom inventory, ensuring equitable access to these spaces while balancing the needs of all academic departments.

Fall and Spring Terms

To ensure that face-to-face courses meet these requirements, valid class times have been established for the Fall and Spring terms. These time blocks are designed to:

  • Minimize scheduling conflicts for students.
  • Maximize the efficient use of classroom space.

While alternative instructional methods may supplement direct classroom instruction, courses offered during the Fall and Spring terms should still adhere to the valid class times listed below due to the considerations regarding student conflicts and classroom utilization. The Timetable Scheduling Guidelines outline eligibility requirements for campus-hosted classroom assignments.

Valid Class Times: 70 Instructional Days

All 3-credit course offerings during Fall and Spring Term should adhere to valid class time options. Courses worth a different number of credits should start or end in alignment with a valid class time.

Flexibility in Mini and Summer Sessions

Mini and Summer Sessions allow for greater flexibility in scheduling. Departments may set their own class times and often integrate various instructional methods to offset reduced contact minutes.

Examples of possible meeting times for all sessions can be found below.

Mini Term Class Times (Winter Mini, May Mini, 3rd Session Summer): 10 instructional days

Synchronous mini-term offerings are expected to meet during all 10 available instructional days during the mini-term. This would result in 70 minutes per credit hour per meeting.

Summer Sessions Course Times (Full, 1st, & 2nd Session)

Here are examples of how synchronous summer offerings might be scheduled by a department. Due to increased flexibility with classroom space, departments may choose their own times for their offerings. Departments should collaborate with complementary subjects to try and avoid conflicts for students enrolled in multiple offerings. The following examples use a 5-day a week meeting pattern.
