THESE NEED UPDATING FOR SPRING CEREMONIES?
The macebearer is a member of the faculty. He/she serves in the University Commencement Ceremony for one year beginning in the fall. The University Commencement Ceremony is only held in the fall semester. The Macebearer should arrive at the Thompson-Boling Arena at least thirty minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony. The Macebearer should go to Dressing Room 3 which is located on the arena floor level on the north side (opposite the river). The Macebearer is a member of the stage party and will lead the stage party in the processional to the stage. The University Registrar will give the signal to the stage party to march. The macebearer precedes first down the middle aisle and stands at the front of the stage until all of the stage party has gone up on the stage. The Macebearer will be seated in the second row on the stage and a stand will be provided for the mace. At the completion of the ceremony the macebearer, carrying the mace, leads the stage party off the stage through the center aisle out the northeast entrance. The macebearer returns the mace to Dressing Room 3 after the completion of the ceremony.
College deans will send the name of the marshal for their respective college. Marshals are to gather in the Ray Mears Room which is located on the arena floor level on the southwest side and collect their college banners. Marshals should arrive thirty minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony. Staff will instruct the marshals and faculty when to line up to march. Marshals are to line up in front of the faculty, forming two lines. The first marshal on each side is to stop at the first row of seats, turn and face one another and all others to follow suit. Once the faculty has walked through the line, the marshals will walk toward their seats and join the faculty. Staff will be there to take the college banner from the marshal.
There is a formula for colleges to determine the number of faculty required to participate in the University Commencement Ceremony, in the fall semester.
- Departments with 20 or more tenured/tenure track faculty should send at least 3 representatives.
- Departments with 10 to 19 tenured/tenure track faculty should send at least 2 representatives.
- Departments with 9 or fewer tenured/tenure track faculty should send at least 1 representative.
The college deans will contact faculty members to participate in the University Commencement Ceremony.
Faculty members required to participate in the faculty processional at the Fall Term University Commencement should arrive dressed in regalia, thirty minutes prior to the beginning of the ceremony, in the Ray Mears Room located near the southwest side on the floor level of the Arena. A commencement worker will line up the faculty members and will guide them when it is time to proceed. The faculty marches down the center aisle through the marshals and proceeds to the faculty seating areas roped off on the right and left of the arena floor. When all faculty members have arrived they may be seated. The faculty remains for the rest of the ceremony and exits following the stage party.
